Description from the seller
Orthodox icon depicting the Virgin and Child, surrounded by secondary scenes.
Tempera painting on a wooden panel with a golden background. Inscriptions in Cyrillic.
Probably from the late 19th century, of Bulgarian origin.
Main subject: Virgin Mary (ΜΡ ΘΥ – Mother of God / Mère de Dieu) holding the Child Jesus (IC XC – Jesus Christ), in a late Byzantine style.
Technique: Tempera painting on wooden panel, with a gold leaf background.
Dimensions: 30.5 x 45.5 cm
Probable origin: Bulgarian or Russian icon school (19th century or early 20th century). Acquired in Sofia in 1992.
Inscriptions in Cyrillic (notably 'Воскресение' – Resurrection) at the bottom center.
Secondary scenes
A bearded saint holding a book (probably Saint Nicholas).
◦ A Virgin in prayer (orant Virgin or Mary of the Passion).
A scene of the Resurrection of Christ.
Condition of preservation
The icon shows visible wear, cracks, abrasions, and loss of gilding, especially in the secondary portraits.
The wooden panel on the back is old, unrestored, with signs of oxidation and wear, typical of authentic pieces.
Good antique condition with visible cracks and signs of age.
This large icon testifies to the Byzantine tradition in Orthodox religious art.
It was doubtless intended for domestic use or a private chapel.
