Thai gilded bronze sculpture of a Thepanom, a celestial being in the Buddhist pantheon, dating to the mid‑19th century Rattanakosin period, about 62.5 cm high on a stepped base, from a private collection; good condition.
Description from the seller
Magnificent Thai bronze sculpture, covered in gold leaf, dating from the Rattanakosin period of the mid-19th century. The work depicts a Thepanom, a celestial and angelic being from Thai Buddhist tradition and pantheon.
Characteristic of the iconography of the first Rattanakosin period, known for its decorative richness and the elegance of its lines.
The figure presents a regal and refined posture, symbol of veneration or blessing, with an arm raised in a ritual gesture. It wears ceremonial attire finely worked, richly decorated with floral and geometric motifs on the front, impressed into the gold surface.
The high crown and the ornamental elements confirm the depiction of a celestial protective being, a Thai deva.
The serene and harmonious face, along with the vertical pose, convey balance and sacredness.
The original gilding, still largely preserved, gives the statue a luminous and solemn presence.
The sculpture is mounted on a stepped base, also decorated, which enhances its presence and amplifies the scenic impact.
Often, these sculptures were placed at the entrance of temples as spiritual guardians; in fact, at the back, at the base, we notice the typical ring used to secure them.
A work of great historical and artistic charm, typical of mid-1800s Rattanakosin production, perfect for collectors of Eastern antiques and Thai sacred art, also used in meditation.
From a private collection.
