This ammonite belongs to the species Desmoceras (Desmoceras) latidorsatum, dating back to the Early Cretaceous, about 110 million years ago, and comes from the famous fossil-rich areas of Mahajanga, Madagascar. What makes this specimen extraordinary is its iridescent fossilization: the original shell, composed of aragonite, has been exceptionally preserved, maintaining its lamellar structure intact. It is precisely this microstructure that, interacting with light, creates an optical phenomenon similar to mother-of-pearl, with reflections ranging from emerald green to fiery red, and shimmering gold and violet hues.
