Description from the seller
Rare Barrandeops Granulops – Red trilobite.
This splendid trilobite belongs to the species Barrandeops granulops, a member of the order Phacopida that lived during the Middle Devonian, about 390 million years ago.
It comes from the site of Hmar Lakhdad, in the Alnif region of southeastern Morocco, famous for its fossil specimens with the characteristic red coloration.
Barrandeops granulops is distinguished by its compact and arched body, a robust cranium with a highly pronounced granular surface, and large schizocoralian eyes composed of numerous separate optical lenses, which provided excellent three-dimensional vision.
The most remarkable feature of this trilobite is the intense red color of its exoskeleton, due to the high iron content that impregnated the fossil during silicification.
Age: Middle Devonian (~390 million years ago)
Species: Barrandeops granulops
Order: Phacopida
Origin: Hmar Lakhdad, Alnif, Morocco
Trilobite measurement (without matrix): 42 mm
Condition: Authentic specimen on original matrix, with natural preservation of coloration.
