Central Africa. Gabon. Fang people. Tribe settled in the central-western region of Africa that encompasses Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and Gabon. They use these elongated masks with bulging skulls, arched eyebrows that connect with the marked nose, forming, as a whole, a heart. Symbolism of authority and respect for the community’s law. The styling of these masks influenced the development of Cubism and modern art. They fascinated and inspired artists of the early 20th century who used this formal concept in their representations.
