The Kongo peoples encompass multiple ethnic groups and kingdoms of varying significance: the Yombe, the Vili, the Sundi, the Cabindais, the Woyo, the Beembé, the Dondo... They unified as early as the 14th century to establish the ancient kingdom of Kongo in the region of the Cabinda estuary and northwest Angola. The founder of this kingdom was the war chief Nimi, around 1400; its capital was Mbanza (in present-day Angola). The Kingdom of Kongo weakened under Portuguese domination, then through regional wars, and finally by the division of the kingdom into its different ethnic groups, which no longer recognized the central authority.
One can clearly recognize in this face the features also present on Nkisi-type statues used by the priest, whose eyes were also inlaid with glass or mirror fragments.
