Description from the seller
Beautiful and large Ashanti duafé comb from Ghana, carefully hand-carved from wood. Duafé (literally 'wood for combing') are traditional combs used by Akan and Ashanti women and also served as spiritual symbols of beauty, dignity, and femininity.
This exceptional mask depicts a seated mother figure at the top, breastfeeding her baby — an important symbol within Ashanti culture. The mother-and-child representation signifies fertility, care, the passing of life, and the protective role of women.
The upper part is richly decorated with carvings and traces of ochre-colored pigment, while the long comb teeth are made from a second type of wood.
Symbolic meaning (Ashanti)
Duafé (comb) – beauty, self-care, female dignity, inner strength
Mother with child – fertility, blessing, continuity of the family
Large stylized forms – spiritual dignity and status
A particularly decorative and culturally valuable object.
Condition
Fair to good condition.
At the bottom, a small piece of wood is broken (see the last photo).
Light wear spots on the hand and figure.
Structure of the presentation remains further intact.
Dimensions
Height: 50 cm.
Width: 10.5 cm.
Depth: 7 cm.
Weight: 330 grams.
The lot is carefully packaged and sent by registered mail, insured, with a track-and-trace number.
