Rare Egyptian bronze seated Baboon. It has a compact, upright posture with the hands resting on the knees. The figure can stand unsupported on its base, will be delivered with the wooden display as shown on the pictures (not fixed).
Size: ± 51,3 x 24 mm (Baboon)
Height display: ± 40,2 mm
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
This is a rare depiction in bronze of Toth represented as a sitting baboon.
The baboon was linked to the sun and the moon; the Egyptians thought that the animals had foreknowledge of the sun’s arrival, which they heralded with screams and paw-waving, and similarly must have had knowledge about the moon. Thoth was one of the gods associated with the moon, and thus there was also a relation between this god and the baboon, which became one of his sacred animals; sometimes the god himself assumed the shape of a baboon.
