Ancient Roman white stone bust of Aphrodite, dating to the 1st–2nd century AD, in good condition and mounted on a marble column stand, acquired in 2024 from the Netherlands with a certificate of authenticity available on request.

Small and finely carved white stone bust of the Goddess Aphrodite. Her long, centrally parted wavy hair falls gracefully to the shoulders and is crowned with a delicate diadem. The back of the head is intricately worked, the hair arranged in orderly ridged waves that converge at the nape and are gathered into a slender, finely incised plait. The facial features are softly rendered, giving a calm, idealised expression.
The workmanship is of notably high quality, with crisp detailing to the facial features and drapery. The bust is presented on a marble column stand, which is included in the sale.
Height bust: ± 30 mm
Height: ± 56,1 mm (including marble base)
Condition: very good condition, high quality and detailed carving. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images.

Aphrodite, derived from the Phoenician goddess Astarte and known in Roman mythology as Venus was the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and fertility. In Roman society prospective brides offered Venus a gift before their wedding. Her attributes included the winged godling Eros, a mirror, cockle shell, dove, apple and myrtle wreath.
