Description from the seller

Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.

Small and finely carved white stone bust of the Goddess Aphrodite. Her long, centrally parted wavy hair falls gracefully to the shoulders and is crowned with a delicate diadem. The back of the head is intricately worked, the hair arranged in orderly ridged waves that converge at the nape and are gathered into a slender, finely incised plait. The facial features are softly rendered, giving a calm, idealised expression.

The workmanship is of notably high quality, with crisp detailing to the facial features and drapery. The bust is presented on a marble column stand, which is included in the sale.

Height bust: ± 30 mm
Height: ± 56,1 mm (including marble base)

Condition: very good condition, high quality and detailed carving. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images.

Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).

Aphrodite, derived from the Phoenician goddess Astarte and known in Roman mythology as Venus was the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and fertility. In Roman society prospective brides offered Venus a gift before their wedding. Her attributes included the winged godling Eros, a mirror, cockle shell, dove, apple and myrtle wreath.
