Labradorite is named for the province of Labrador, Canada, where it was first discovered in the late 18th century by Moravian missionaries. Although first found in Canada, labradorite is now mined in various other locations worldwide, including Russia, Finland, Madagascar, Mexico, and the United States. The stone is known for its characteristic "labradorescence," or iridescence, which gives it a shimmering, colorful effect that varies in intensity and color depending on the angle and light.
