Victorian Gothic pendant in solid silver and opalescent mother-of-pearl depicting the first appearance of Our Lady of Lourdes.

The first appearance of the Madonna of Lourdes to Bernadette Soubirous occurred on February 11, 1858, in the Massabielle cave near Lourdes, France, while the young girl was gathering wood with her sister and a friend; she heard a noise, saw a 'Lady dressed in white,' and prayed the rosary with her before the vision vanished.

Date and place: February 11, 1858, Massabielle Grotto.
Protagonist: Santa Bernadette Soubirous, a 14-year-old girl.
The event: Bernadette was taking off her stockings to cross the Gave River when she heard a noise like a gust of wind and saw a Lady dressed in white, with a white veil, a blue belt, and a yellow rose on each foot, reciting the rosary with her.
The reaction: The Lady disappeared after prayer, and Bernadette told her companions what had happened, who had seen nothing, asking them to keep the secret, which did not happen.
