Description from the seller

A complex Russian Orthodox icon, of synaxaric and symbolic character, that gathers various mysteries and saints around the central axis of the Crucifixion. I will explain it in parts:

In the center appears Jesus Christ crucified (Распятие Христово), with:

The cross with three beams (typical of Orthodox).

Adam's skull beneath the cross (the blood of Christ redeems fallen humanity).

On the sides, the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist in a reduced format.

This central axis governs the entire theological composition of the icon.

Upper part

Christ in glory

On the cross appears Christ enthroned in the clouds, blessing, surrounded by celestial signs. It represents:

To Christ as Judge and Lord of the universe.

The union of Passion, Resurrection, and Final Judgment.

Old Testament scene (left)

A small narrative scene, probably.

The prophet Elijah taken to heaven in a chariot of fire, or

A symbolic episode related to divine fire (very common in Russian didactic icons).

Right side

Holy monk or starets

Large figure, with a beard and dark habit.

Probably a Russian holy ascetic (for example, Saint Anthony, Saint Theodosius, or a local starets).

Its size indicates the patron of the icon's special devotion.

Lower part

Holy warriors on horseback

Two equestrian figures facing each other symmetrically.

Saint George (left), defeating evil.

San Demetrio (right)

Both represent.

The spiritual fight against evil

The defense of the orthodox faith.

Marco and inscriptions

Inscription in Old Cyrillic (Ecclesiastical Slavic).

Decorative frame with geometric and floral motifs, typical of central Russia.

Didactic and devotional function, designed for domestic prayer.

Dating and style (estimation)

Russia, 18th–19th centuries.

Temple by heart on the table.

Gold at the back with natural wear.

Very rich composition, icon on commission, not popular.

Global meaning

This icon does not narrate a single scene, but summarizes the entire story of salvation.

Prophecy (Old Testament)

Passion and Redemption

Heavenly glory

Spiritual combat of the saints
