Description from the seller
Paul François Berthoud (1870-1939) - Elegant bust of a young woman with a bow - Signed terracotta - Early 20th century
Beautiful terracotta bust created by Paul François Berthoud (Paris 1870 – Paris 1939), a renowned French sculptor, painter, and engraver active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Influenced by the Art Nouveau and Symbolist styles, Berthoud regularly exhibited at the Paris salons (Société des Artistes Français, Salon d’Automne, and Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts) and became famous for delicate and refined works, including the famous terracotta bust of Sarah Bernhardt (1900). He often signed his sculptures with 'P.F. Berthoud' or the pseudonym Gilbert Lanquetin.
This work depicts a young woman with an elegant appearance, a serene and dreamy face, an elaborate updo hairstyle with a large bow or ribbon knot on her head, typical of the fashion of the era. The draping of the blouse and the details of her hair are rendered with great sensitivity and realism, characteristic of the artist's style.
• Company: Incisa sul retro 'P.F. Berthoud' (visible in the photos).
Material: natural, unglazed terracotta, with a warm and authentic color.
• Dimensions: height 52 cm, width 47 cm, depth 21.5 cm.
Weight: approximately 6.5 kg.
Good condition for its age, with signs of age confirming its authenticity. It features a slight cracking (a stable superficial crack) on the front bust and an old professional restoration on the back (visible in detailed photos). No serious damage, solid structure.
A rare and fascinating collectible piece, perfect for lovers of French Art Nouveau. Italian private provenance.
