Hockende Holzfigur is a hand-carved wooden figure in a Volkskunst style from Africa (West/Central Africa), measuring 47 cm in height and weighing about 5 kg.
Description from the seller
African Wooden Figure – Hand-Carved – Early to Mid-20th Century
Powerful African wooden figure, hand-carved from a single block of hardwood.
The sculpture depicts a compact, strongly stylised human form with bent legs and arms held close to the torso.
The head is large in proportion, with deeply carved facial features, half-closed eyes, and an expressive mouth, giving the figure a distinctly archaic and ritual appearance.
The surface shows a rich, natural patina developed over decades of age and use, with visible wear, drying cracks, abrasions, and areas of erosion consistent with traditional African wood sculpture.
The underside is hollowed, a feature commonly associated with ritual or ceremonial use and long-term aging.
The carving technique, proportions, and surface character suggest an origin in West or Central Africa.
A precise ethnic attribution cannot be stated with certainty. Estimated date of production: early to mid-20th century.
The figure is offered in unrestored condition. No modern repairs or interventions are visible. All signs of age and use are considered part of the object’s authenticity and historical integrity.
A strong and expressive sculptural object, suitable for collectors of African art, ethnographic objects, and early modern tribal sculpture.
