Decorated calabash bowl with a hand-painted geometric design from Africa, dating to the 20th century, in good condition with minor wear, dimensions 38 cm in width and height and 20 cm depth, weight 800 g.
Description from the seller
Decorated calabash bowl – hand-painted geometric design – 20th century
Large decorative calabash bowl, handcrafted from natural gourd and hand-painted with a striking geometric pattern.
The exterior is decorated with a repeating motif of interlocking oval and diamond shapes in black and terracotta tones, creating a strong visual rhythm and balanced symmetry across the domed surface.
The interior shows the natural, untreated calabash surface with visible age-related marks and patina.
The rim is darkened and neatly finished, providing a clear contrast to the lighter interior.
A small cord loop is attached, indicating that the bowl was likely intended for wall display.
Decorated calabashes of this type were traditionally used in various African cultures for domestic, ceremonial, or decorative purposes.
The exact regional origin cannot be determined with certainty; however, the object is stylistically consistent with African decorative gourd work of the 20th century.
The condition is good and authentic, with minor surface wear and small abrasions consistent with age and use.
No cracks or structural damage observed.
A visually strong and well-preserved ethnographic object, suitable for collectors of African art, folk art, and traditional decorative objects.
