Rare African Mwana Pwo Luena mask from the Chokwe, from Congo.
Mwana Pwo reflects all the positive qualities of an ideal woman who can serve as a Chokwe role model.
Height: 15 cm, only the wood mask.
This Chokwe Luena mask is dated from the first half of the 20th century and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The face is dark brown in color with a smooth surface. The typical Chokwe cross on the forehead. Decorative scars on both cheeks. The mouth is slightly open. The hood is decorated with buttons, cowrie shells, and snail shells. Jewelry made of copper wire adorns both ears. The hair is made of cords, and the net is made of textile fibers. This mask comes from the Chokwe people. It belongs to the famous category known as Mwana pwo and was used during the ceremonies of circumcision and initiation of young boys. The headdress attached to the mask is well preserved. The face displays typical Chokwe carving patterns and expressions.
The Chokwe are members of a large cultural cluster that now resides in central Angola, parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia. This cluster comprises several different but related peoples, the most prominent of which are the Chokwe, but it also includes the Lunda, Ovimbundu, Lwena, Luvala, Mbwela, and Imbangala. Due to complex interactions among these groups, the region shares stylistic elements and figurative forms rooted in common mythologies and ritual practices. The current mask called Mwana Pwo depicts a beautiful young woman and symbolizes the female ancestor. The Mwana Pwo mask appears during initiation and circumcision ceremonies for young boys (Mukanda). It also features in the induction of new chiefs, funerals, fertility rituals, and public entertainment. During performances, Mwana Pwo is always accompanied by male character masks such as Cihongo or Cikunza. The dancer portraying Mwana Pwo attracts a large audience, especially women.
