Antique Napoleon III style jewellery box, dating to circa 1850–1900, made with ebony veneer and ivory inlays, model incrusté aux Griffons, dimensions 40 × 29.5 × 15 cm and weight about 7 kg.
Description from the seller
Magnificent French jewelry box from the second half of the 19th century, during the Napoleonic era (circa 1860-1870).
Entirely crafted in polished ebony veneer, it is richly decorated with fine inlays of ivory forming complex geometric patterns: fillets, diamonds, scrolls, and baroque compositions. The lid features a raised central panel with a spectacular decoration: an oval medallion surrounded by scrolls and flanked by two facing griffins (mythical creatures symbolizing protection), framed by angular and floral motifs in ivory. The front façade is adorned with a diamond-shaped lock inlaid with ivory, featuring symmetrical patterns of arches and fillets.
At opening, the lid is lined with an original mirror (slight traces of oxidation). The interior, made of citronnier veneer, is arranged with a removable, compartmentalized tray, including several boxes with lids.
The box is equipped with a large internal lock with two bolts (or bars), enhancing the security of the valuable objects it contained.
This type of box was typically produced by renowned Parisian workshops and was intended for the wealthy bourgeoisie and aristocracy, reflecting the splendor, eclecticism, and opulence of the Second Empire, often used by high society ladies for their jewelry on a dressing table.
Condition satisfactory for its time, especially for a piece of furniture that has been handled regularly. Beautiful overall patina. Some minor scratches and missing pieces on the woodwork, small natural cracks in the bone, and minor wear.
This jewelry box perfectly embodies the Second Empire's eclectic taste for black/OS contrasts and decor inspired by revisited Baroque styles.
