Un ennemi du peuple [Manuscript with annotations for staging and scenography], Paris, Perrin & Cie, 1921, 1st edition, in-12, 161 pages, French originally, a unique stage edition enriched with annotations by Maurice de Féraudy and Henrik Ibsen.
Description from the seller
Unique copy of this definitive edition for the stage, enriched with numerous annotations written by the director and actor Maurice Féraudy (1859-1932).
Intended for the performance on June 15, 1921; it includes about a hundred interleaved sheets between the pages of the text, detailing the positions and movements of the characters on stage and the elements of scenography. The text is also annotated with some passages crossed out, others added in the margins.
Bound in chocolate half-percaline, smooth spine decorated with a title piece bearing the handwritten initials 'E du P'. Covers preserved, without the spine. Overall in good, acceptable condition. Corners rubbed and softened, corners pierced. Hinge slightly weakened. Interior fresh and clean, paper normally yellowed, annotations clearly legible. Very good copy.
An Enemy of the People is a five-act play by the Norwegian author Henrik Ibsen. Along with Hedda Gabler and A Doll's House, it is one of the playwright's most famous works. Published in 1882, it was first performed in January 1883 in Oslo.
Dominique Marie Maurice de Féraudy is a French actor, a member of the Comédie-Française, also a playwright and director, born in Joinville-le-Pont on December 3, 1859, and died in Paris on May 12, 1932. He joined the Comédie-Française in 1880; became a member in 1887; served as dean in 1929; retired in 1929; and was named an honorary member in 1930.
Coming from aristocracy and the son of Colonel de Féraudy, he entered the Conservatoire in Got's class, graduating in 1880 with a first prize in Comedy. He was engaged at the Comédie-Française – where he remained for fifty years – and debuted in the role of Sosie in Amphitryon. His most famous role – which he played over 2,000 times at the Comédie-Française and elsewhere – remains that of Isidore Lechat in Les Affaires sont les affaires by Octave Mirbeau. He was a director, writer, published collections of poems, wrote lyrics for many songs (including Fascination), boulevard plays, and adapted Jules Claretie's novel Brichanteau for the stage.
