Barye: Catalogue Raisonné des Sculptures by Michel Poletti and Alain Richarme is a French hardback art book (512 pages, 29.9 x 23.5 cm) published by Gallimard in its first edition (2000) in good condition.
Description from the seller
Building on years of research into the works themselves, as documented in archives, this volume brings together and compares, for the first time, an exhaustive classification of models and editions of the sculptures by one of the greatest representatives of Romanticism: Antoine Louis Barye (1795-1875). The two catalogs that comprise this book analyze all the sculpted works: while the 'catalogue raisonn des bronzes' lists over three hundred entries, finally clarifying, among other things, the 'artist's proofs,' 'fine proofs,' 'period casts,' and 'posthumous editions,' the 'summary catalog of unpublished sculptures' arranges the artist's creations in chronological order, from the plaster models at the École des Beaux-Arts to public and private commissions. The artist who modeled both mythological figures and panthers or bears—whom Théophile Gautier nicknamed the 'Michelangelo of the Menagerie' for the violence of his wild beast battles and the strength of his bronze modeling—is here magnificently represented with six hundred and eighty reproductions of his works. This art book has now become the essential reference for any enthusiast.
