Grand stamped-official judicial sheet from circa 1710, written in French on laid paper, elongated format (38 cm by 17 cm) for civil appeal procedures and bearing royal registry markings.
Description from the seller
Grand judicial sheet on stamped paper (circa 1710) – Civil appeal procedure – Royal registry – Ancien Régime. 38cm x 17cm.
Original handwritten manuscript leaf, in elongated format (large folio), written in brown ink on antique laid paper, featuring:
Official stamped paper with printed header of the type 'Greffier – Expéditions – France' (typography and royal ornament), judicial folds in a cross (transport and filing).
irregular edges, untrimmed, rust spots, old stains, wear from use
Partially annotated verso (by zones)
Handwritten signatures and initials at the end of the act.
The set is authentic, with no visible modern restoration. This document is an official judicial act written on stamped paper, belonging to the civil procedure of the Ancien Régime, and more specifically, an act of appeal or writings related to an appeal procedure.
The clearly legible textual elements indicate the explicit mention of 'Sieur Roy de France,' reference to a higher jurisdiction, typical appeal procedure phrases (appellant / appellee, conviction, costs, previous sentence).
It is a legally operative act, intended to have effect before a court.
The text develops in a continuous and structured manner, recalling the previous decision (sentence or judgment), outlining the grounds of the appeal, mentioning the parties involved, referencing convictions, costs, damages, legal formulas related to admissibility and continuation of the proceedings. The writing is lengthy, reasoned, and does not correspond to a simple notification or a draft, but to a complete judicial document.
The sheet features a clerk's office printed header (tax paper), handwritten signatures at the bottom, validation initials, and characteristic graphical marks of legal practitioners. These elements attest to official production by the clerk's office and genuine use in a judicial procedure.
The dating is based on a set of consistent clues, such as the type of royal stamped paper.
header typography, legal language used, paleographic style
Procedural structure (civil appeal)
Consistent dating: early 18th century, around 1708–1715.
Professional legal cursive writing
Numerous abbreviations, regular and assured ductus, practitioner's practiced hand, typical of registry and lawyer writings under the Ancien Régime.
Iconic document of French royal justice, showing the use of fiscal stamped paper, the functioning of appeal procedures, and the centrality of Sieur Roy as a source of justice.
This type of sheet exactly corresponds to the pieces currently preserved in the judicial series of the Departmental Archives, rarely available on the market.
Ideal piece for a collector of judicial archives, a legal historian, an enthusiast of royal documents and stamped paper.
Normal old wear, healthy paper, without structural breakage, stable ink, clear but solid folds.
Very good state of authenticity, in accordance with an archival document.
