Description from the seller
Antique depiction – Saint Martin sharing his cloak – 19th century
Ancient seal stamp featuring a turned wooden handle in baluster shape, with a uniform brown patina.
The bronze matrix depicts an identifiable religious scene: Saint Martin on horseback sharing his cloak with a poor person.
The composition features a prominent relief, typical of 19th-century impressions. It is clearly distinguishable:
Saint Martin riding a horse.
The poor in rags on the left.
The ground and the background are slightly sketchy.
The peripheral legend (readable in the mirror image on the last photo) indicates:
Saint Martin de Longny • Diocese of Séez
It corresponds to the abbey or parish of Longny-au-Perche, in the current Orne department.
The seal probably served for official correspondence or parish documents.
Dimensions: height 11 cm; matrix diameter 3.5 cm.
Dating
The engraving, typography, and handle style place this seal around the mid to late 19th century, a period when parishes still had figurative seals made for routine administration.
State: Old and uniform patina. The relief of the scene is still clearly legible.
Interest
Authentic seal of a historic Norman parish, illustrating an emblematic motif of Western Christianity: the gesture of charity of Saint Martin.
Typical object from 19th-century parish offices, sought after in collections of religious iconography, local history, or seals.
Provenance
Private collection
