Description from the seller
Antique ecclesiastical badge – Saint Loup (Loÿs) – Diocese of Sens – 19th century
Solid brass badge mounted on a turned wooden handle, depicting a bishop in liturgical robes holding a crozier.
The peripheral inscription reads: “✠ ST LOUP ✠ PR DE GESVE – DIOCESE OF SENS”.
(The most coherent interpretation: Saint Loup, probably 'Prieuré de Gesves / Gesve / Gésve'… the exact toponym is not clear; the engraving appears handcrafted and abbreviated.
The matrix is oval, decorated with a hatched background typical of 19th-century engravings. The handle, original, shows a consistent patina, with no visible restoration.
The metal ring above the matrix is decorated with floral motifs engraved with a burin, a detail uncommon on parish seals and typical of artisanal productions from the second half of the 19th century.
Dimensions: Total height: 10 cm - Matrix: 3.5 x 2.5 cm
State: homogeneous patina, consistent signs of use, legible engraving, stable handle.
Provenance: Private collection.
