Description from the seller

Very beautiful and heavy short sword 'ntsoko' Saka/Ngandu.
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Total length: 48 cm
Materials: wrought iron, wood, red copper.
Period: early 20th century
Provenance: from a private Belgian collection.

The blacksmiths of the Mongo group to which the Saka belong produced a wide variety of similar-style knives. This leaf-shaped knife was used, it seems, for combat but also as a prestige weapon. Knives of this type were found in the possession of every adult man among the Saka and their neighbors (Westerdijk, African Metal Implements, 1984).
