Description from the seller
Ancient silver portable reliquary – Cristo Preñado – Spain (Castile), second half of the 17th century
Rare reliquary in a convex silver medal, of Iberian production, featuring the iconography known as Cristo Preñado, typical of Spanish popular devotion at the end of the 17th century.
The front is adorned with a strongly arched Christ crucified, whose posture follows the convexity of the medallion. This particular representation, inherited from late Gothic models and maintained in popular Baroque art, is traditionally associated with votive functions related to fertility, pregnancy, and protection during childbirth.
The reverse features a relief of the Virgin and Child, complementing the devotional and protective reading of the object.
The decor is entirely structured by filigree circular patches and spiraled motifs punctuated with micro-beads, framed by a twisted border and a fluted frieze.
The perimeter is enriched with eight stylized cruciform protrusions, characteristic of Castilian popular goldsmithery of the period.
This specific type of reliquary, both in its convex structure and its arched Christ iconography, as well as its feminine votive function, is documented in the institutional collections of the Iberian Peninsula.
A comparable specimen is notably preserved in the Lisbon cathedral treasury, attesting to the dissemination and recognition of this model in Iberian religious contexts.
The reliquary is of the enclosed type.
The relic was integrated during assembly and the entire was then permanently welded, without any opening device. The relic is neither visible nor accessible without intervention, in accordance with the usual practice for this type of object.
Original high ribbed bezel with an antique ring, indicating signs of wear.
Very good antique condition. Wear and patina consistent with age and devotional use. No visible restoration.
Photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complement their presentation. They allow you to assess their condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
Happy bidding
In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as a sacred art object. The relics it contains are not the subject of the transaction but are included gratuitously for their historical and cultural value.
