Ancient Roman bronze Pelta amulet pendant, dating to the 1st–2nd century AD, in good wearable condition with a dark green patina, currently strung on a modern leather cord; size about 45.6 mm.

Ancient Roman bronze Pelta-shaped amulet with concentric circle decoration. The amulet has two ancient perforation holes from which the amulet is now strung on a modern leather jewellery cord, perfect for modern wear.
Such amulets are traditionally interpreted as apotropaic objects, symbolically linked to protection and martial symbolism in the Roman world.
Size: ± 45,6 mm
Condition: good solid condition, wearable, strung on modern leather jewellery cord. Attractive dark green patina and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
A Pelta is a small light shield, used by the Greek and Roman troops. The most easily identifiable attribute that is associated with the Amazons is the pelta, also called the Amazon shield.
The shield has an elliptical or crescent-shaped form. Pelta-shaped motifs are frequent decorations in mosaics, dress accessories, fixtures etc.
