Yoruba Carved Caryatid Stool / Ritual Bowl – Nigeria, mid-20th century

Description
This finely carved Yoruba object represents a miniature caryatid stool or ritual bowl, supported by multiple anthropomorphic figures.
The central standing figure carries the upper bowl, while a secondary head figure forms part of the lower structure. Such objects were used in ritual, ceremonial or prestige contexts, often associated with status, spiritual protection or domestic altars.
The sculptural style shows classic Yoruba characteristics:
elongated proportions
almond-shaped, half-closed eyes
linear facial scarification
geometric carved patterns
Despite its relatively small size, the piece displays a complex composition and strong sculptural presence, indicating skilled craftsmanship.
