Description from the seller

Ancient votive tableau – Marian ex-voto, Bavaria (Upper Bavaria), around 1820

Oil (or fat tempera) on wood panel, presented in its original antique frame.

Subject and iconography
A typical scene from a South German ex-voto: the Virgin Mary, standing on a cloud, radiates beams of light toward a rider thrown to the ground during a fall from a horse. Two cherubs accompany the celestial apparition.
The composition clearly illustrates a miraculous intervention following an accident, a recurring theme in Bavarian ex-votos from the late 18th to early 19th century.

The inscription painted in German Gothic identifies the protagonists and the circumstance of the vow.
Probable lecture (with minor reservations regarding regional spelling):

The praises go to Andreas Brunner, Schwaithmaier's son, and Daniel Wittmann, Steier's son, from Walting.

It is therefore a nominative testimony, which strongly reinforces the historical and ethnographic interest of the piece.

Dating and provenance
An old label on the back indicates:
Upper Bavaria – Votive tablet around 1820 (Dr. W. Eschenbach)
This mention is consistent both stylistically and technically: a soft palette, naive but expressive figures, schematic landscape, typical of Bavarian popular workshops around 1800–1830.

State
Generalized cracks, normal for the period.
Wear, friction marks, and small visible losses, without obvious heavy repainting.
Old reverse side, non-parqueted, with signs of use and old pencil inscriptions.

I invite you to view all the photos that attest to the quality and condition of the item you are about to bid on.
