Antique psychrometer from the Netherlands, circa 1930, made of brass, wood, glass and enamel, in good condition with minor signs of aging and featuring two thermometers, a glass tube and an enamel table for reading relative humidity.
Description from the seller
A fine antique psychrometer made in the Netherlands around 1930. Likely manufactured by Arnoldus van der Korput from Baarn (1887-1968).
It is an ingenious device. It consists of a bottom glass tube, with a thermometer on the left and right.
Between the two thermometers hangs a beautiful enamel chart. It works as follows: by evaporation, a liquid in the lower glass cools down. How much it cools depends on the amount of vapor in the air. This device measures humidity. The glass tube at the bottom is filled with water. On the right side of the glass, there is an opening through which the vapor can escape. The right thermometer measures the temperature of the MOIST air. The left thermometer measures the temperature of the DRY air. Sometimes, a piece of cardboard is waved to speed up the process. Now, you select the temperature of the wet thermometer and the dry temperature on the left in the table. You can then read the relative humidity in percent from the table.
The instructions are also fully at the bottom of the table.
The enamel tables, glassware, and thermometers are in perfect condition and still function well. The clamps that hold the thermometers and tubes show some rust. I consider their condition to be very good. If desired, you can replace the clamps with new ones, which are still available for purchase.
This item has hung in my ice skating museum for years, because measuring humidity, temperature, and air pressure is very important for determining whether it will freeze or thaw.. it's quite helpful if you want to go skating on natural ice or participate in an Elfstedentocht :)
A fine addition for the collector of scientific instruments.
