Description from the seller
Figurative bronze figurine of a sitting fairy or nymph, with butterfly wings, in a dreamy, contemplative pose. The childlike, gentle face and closed eyes give the piece a symbolist / romantic appearance. Natural patina.
The marble base (black or very dark, approximately 9.5 cm in diameter) is typical of decorative art bronze from the late 19th to early 20th century.
Period: circa 1890–1930
• Trend: incorporates symbolism / Art Nouveau (with influences from the 'fairy sculpture' that was popular at the time)
Origin: probably French or Belgian, possibly also Austrian.
combination of bronze with a marble pedestal
The decorative yet high-quality casting work.
No signature
The absence of a signature is not uncommon with this type of figurines.
Many were cast in art bronze foundries (sometimes in small series).
Sometimes the signature was originally on the edge of the pedestal or was lost during polishing.
Smaller ateliers also supplied anonymous works for the decorative market.
There are similarities with work from the realm of:
Auguste Moreau
Hippolyte François Moreau
Mathurin Moreau
Good anatomical proportions
Fine detailing in her hair, wings, and dress.
Natural wear and patina, appropriate for aged bronze.
Marble foot is proportionally correct.
This indicates a genuine bronze casting.
Conclusion
An authentic decorative art bronze from around 1900, in a symbolist / art nouveau style, of French or Belgian origin. Not a masterpiece by a famous sculptor, but a quality and charming collectible with clear artistic value.
