Original edition of this beautiful illustrated artist's book, conceived from writing to printing in 1918-19 by the poet, painter and engraver Gabriel Belot.
Printed in only 347 copies, this one of 300 on Rives à la Forme paper, bears number 237.
The illustration consists of wood engravings in and out of text and initial letters engraved in sanguine.
Paperback, folded cover, front cover with square cutouts revealing the title engraved on the endpaper.
In very good condition. Some minor handling marks on the cover. Interior is fresh and clean, well preserved. A fine copy.
Born in 1882 into a family of workers at the Imprimerie Nationale (National Printing Office), Gabriel Belot developed an early passion for the art and aesthetics of the printed book, particularly for wood engraving, of which he would become one of the leading exponents of his generation. Active in Paris during the first half of the 20th century, and a friend of renowned artists and intellectuals such as Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, Noël Clément-Janin, Han Ryner, and Romain Rolland, Gabriel Belot regularly exhibited his works at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d'Automne, and the Société de la Gravure sur Bois Originale.
