A 17th‑century Westerwald stoneware jug with salt glaze and cobalt blue relief decorations, height 22.6 cm, width 15.1 cm, belly diameter 13.0 cm, neck with a mascaron, professionally restored, from the Netherlands, acquired in 2024 from Antiekmarkt.

This is a Westerwald salt-glazed stoneware jug, a type of German pottery known for its distinctive blue cobalt decoration on a gray background.
Features
Material and Glaze: The mug is made of gray stoneware with a salt glaze, which gives it a shiny, lightly textured surface. The salt was added to the oven during the firing process.
Decoration: The decoration is applied with cobalt blue and consists of reliefs of floral motifs, and on the neck, a grotesque mask (mascaron).
Origin: This type of pottery traditionally comes from the Westerwald region in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, also known as the 'Kannenbäckerland'.
Style and Period: The style with the rounded belly and narrow neck (Enghalskanne) has been popular since the 17th century.
