Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first two men to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Sir Edmund Hillary (1919 - 2008) was a New Zealand explorer who reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, together with his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. After Everest, Hillary successfully reached both the North and South Poles, making him the first man to reach both poles and the summit of Everest.

Tenzing Norgay (1914 - 1986) was a Sherpa mountain climber born in Nepal who, together with Hillary, summited Everest. Both men were knighted, and Norgay also received the George Medal for his efforts.
