Description from the seller
Orthodox icon of Christ Pantocrator (Christ Almighty), one of the most central and theologically dense images in Byzantine and Russian iconography.
Iconographic identification
Figure: Jesus Christ
Type: Pantocrator (from Greek Pantokrátor, 'the one who rules all').
Key elements of the icon
Right hand in a blessing gesture.
The fingers form the monogram IC XC (Ιησούς Χριστός), a typical Byzantine blessing gesture.
Left hand holding the orb
The globe symbolizes the cosmos under Christ's dominion as Lord of the universe.
Frontal face and direct gaze
Express judgment, mercy, and omniscience; it is not a naturalistic portrait, but a theological one.
Cruciferous nimbus.
With the inscribed cross and the Greek letters Ὁ ὬΝ ('He who is'), referencing the divine name revealed to Moses.
Registrations
Above: IC XC
On the left, it can be read as 'Image of God'.
On the right, a devotional invocation, typical in Russian icons.
Style and approximate dating
School: Rusa
Technique: Egg temple shot on a board, with a dark background (originally more luminous).
Probable chronology: 18th–19th centuries.
Condition: Visible wear, varnish darkening, and losses in the lower right area, all consistent with an antique devotional piece.
Spiritual significance
This icon is not merely decorative: it is a liturgical presence. Christ appears as Judge and Savior, sovereign of the world but close to the faithful, who stand 'face to face' with Him in prayer.
An authenticity certificate, endorsed by the Ministry of Culture of Estonia, is provided.
