AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Ndaaka Mask – Ituri Forest, DRC – angular typology, strong graphic design, original polychromy

Rare authentic Ndaaka mask, from the Ituri forest, presented here in a particularly sought-after variant: a form less oval, more angular, almost “architectural,” which further enhances the visual impact. The face, stretched and widened at the top, closes to a point toward the bottom, giving the mask an immediate presence and a very modern reading.

The pictorial treatment is remarkable: large triangular flat areas on the forehead, bold contrasts between black and red, then a surface animated by a regular sprinkling of black dots on a patinated light background. This polychromy, cohesive and still very legible, constitutes the signature of Ndaaka and places the piece in a high-level graphic register. The narrow, slanted eyes, the small prominent nasal bridge and above all the mouth open with visible teeth create a strong expression, almost “fierce”, typical of the best specimens.

The peripheral perforations attest to its mounting and wear, and the surface shows a true patina of use: scratches, wear, areas that are more matte or shinier, witnesses of a ritual life rather than an object that is simply “made for.” A rare piece, highly expressive, that ticks all the boxes expected by the demanding enthusiasts of the Ndaaka corpus.
