The Canon A-1 was released as an advanced, higher-spec model above the Canon AE-1.
It features five AE modes and a fully electronic shutter across all speeds.

As Canon’s first multi-mode SLR, it attracted attention for its highly practical Program AE—excellent for quick shooting—and its advanced fully electronic control system.
For a high-amateur model, its performance was exceptional for the time, and despite being relatively expensive, it achieved strong sales.

The camera supports FD and New FD lenses, and even FL lenses can be used (except in auto modes).
Its expandability, including compatibility with motor drives, also contributed to its popularity.

Although the A-1 was aimed at advanced amateurs, it became widely used in ordinary households as well.
As a result, many units found on the second-hand market today are in poor condition or non-functional.

This particular camera is in very good condition: it does not suffer from the common “shutter squeak” issue, and the aperture blades of the lens show no signs of oil.
