Batak Ancestor figure, Pagar, Indonesia
Pagar figures defended against evil spirits. Instilled with apotropaic powers, these figures contained the souls of people who died. Honored with offerings and incarnations, these figures could be used as communication with the ancestors. The torso is compact, with arms and body carved into the block of wood. The figure’s dark encrusted surface enhances its powerful presence Although this piece shows signs of use it features fantastically rich incised decoration. Its dark-colored patina, indicating its considerable age, combined with its elegant design, make it an ethnographic object of great interest.
