Large ceremonial axe of the Hongshan culture, a trapezoidal blade in calcified stone with light brown marbled colouring and chamois, curved edge and double pierced haft hole, dimensions 13.1 cm by 11.9 cm and thickness 1.3 cm, originating from China’s Yellow River basin and dating to the Hongshan period (4th/3rd millennium BCE).

Great ceremonial axe of the Hongshan culture
Trapezoidal axe blade in light brown mottled and chamois colors, with a curved cutting edge and a hafting hole drilled on both sides.
This blade of a stone axe from the Neolithic period likely originates from the Yellow River basin.
China, very probably during the Hongshan period, 4th to 3rd millennium BC.
Dimensions: 13.1 cm x 11.9 cm - thickness 1.3 cm
Partially worn and damaged, showing signs of wear and use.
Provenance: Germany, H.G.R. gallery.
Previously: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
