Spectacular set of 5 chairs model “Peter”, design by Niels Koefoed for Koefoed's Hornslet, all with signatures. The table of the set is offered separately. The “Peter” chair by Niels Koefoed, designed in 1956, is a representative piece of mid-20th-century Scandinavian design, notable for its meticulous treatment of form. Its frame is made of rosewood or pau ferro, a material that not only gives it a warm aesthetic but also great durability and resistance. Its light, organic style has made it a worldwide success.
The chair design is characterized by the flow of its lines and the ergonomics of its backrest. The seat, upholstered in a light tone, contrasts with the dark wood, in addition to the contrast between the smooth, glossy wood finish and the texture of the fabric. Technically, it uses a precise joinery design that ensures the furniture’s stability without visible hardware, a typical feature of Scandinavian design, which seeks the harmonious integration of components. Attention to the wood finish details also demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship, where each piece is worked on individually to highlight the natural beauty of the wood.
Niels Koefoed (1926-2000)
Koefoed was born into a family devoted to furniture design and manufacture. His father, Einar Koefoed, had opened a furniture factory in Hornslet (Denmark) in the twenties, Koefoed's Møbelfabrik. In the 1950s and 60s, the company became well known for Niels Koefoed’s popular dining chairs.
One of Koefoed’s early designs that received significant attention was the Peter dining chair from 1957. The chair’s appeal lay in its light, minimalist style, with a comfortable curved back. It appears Koefoed gave the chair the name of his son.
In 1964, Koefoed created his most iconic design: the Eva dining chair, named after another of his daughters. An described the tall and graceful chair as feminine, with full hips and narrow shoulders. It was part of a series of dining chairs named after important women in Koefoed’s life, the other two being Ingrid, also named after a daughter, and Lis. Together, the chairs were known as “the three charming girls.”
In 2004, Koefoed’s Møbelfabrik moved to Thailand, where it continued to produce furniture. Many of its mid-century classic designs, such as the Peter and Eva chairs, are reproduced today by the Danish company CASØ Furniture.
Niels Koefoed’s furniture are demonstrations of mastery through dedication.
About the Modern Scandinavian style and design
When we refer to the Nordic or Scandinavian design style, we are talking about the northern European countries, precisely Sweden and Norway, but it extends to Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. This style is marked by its functionality, utility, formality, minimalism, timelessness, and durability, use of local and environmentally friendly materials, such as wood. The stylistic elegance we know arrived thanks to the influence of early 20th-century decorative movements (Art Nouveau or Jugendstil) and with the simplicity and purity of the interwar art movements (Constructivism, De Stijl, Bauhaus…). The Stockholm Exhibition of 1930 was an important reference point, where designers mixed local materials with modernity to create comfortable, bright spaces.
In 1954 the term “Scandinavian design” was coined, following an exhibition that traveled North America with that name, promoting both the lifestyle and the decoration of the Nordic countries.
