Description from the seller
Funerary mingqi statuette in ceramic depicting a court lady. Tang Dynasty (618–907).
This elegant terracotta statuette depicts a court lady standing with her arms folded on her stomach.
She is draped in a flowing coat falling in soft folds over a long dress.
The surface of the piece, covered with a light slip, retains traces of red polychromy, indicating the care taken in the original coloring.
The silhouette, of a restrained sobriety, is distinguished by the hairstyle featuring high twisted buns formed into two chignons, characteristic of feminine taste during the Tang dynasty and evidenced in numerous representations from that period.
This fashion, popularized during the 8th century, reflects a pursuit of monumental elegance and an ideal of opulent beauty, in harmony with the splendor of the Tang court.
The representation of women, figures of refinement and distinction, here illustrates the importance of feminine aesthetics in Tang culture, reflecting both an ideal of beauty and a privileged social status.
Mingqi were an integral part of funerary furniture intended to accompany the deceased in the afterlife, ensuring the continuity of their social status and material comfort.
Products from the workshops of the major ceramic centers of Henan or Shaanxi testify to the economic prosperity and cosmopolitanism of the Tang China, a period marked by intense exchanges along the Silk Road.
