A complete Yamaha vintage set of very high quality.
The words 'elegant' and 'impressive' perfectly summarize the aesthetics and functionalities of the new Yamaha MT44D recording system.
The MT44D features an elegant black finish. It operates at the standard cassette speed of 1⅞ ips and offers higher-end Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction functions. Although designed as a 4-track recorder, it is compatible with classic stereo cassette recorders: a stereo recording can be made on a standard recorder and then played back on the MT44D on tracks 1 (L) and 2 (R).
The connections of the MT44D are located on the rear panel, via phono jacks for the four inputs and the four line outputs.
An 8-pin DIN connector, labeled 'Remote', allows connection of the remote control.
The cassette compartment is moved to the left, the four peak indicators are on the right, and the transport controls, among other things, are ideally positioned in the center. All recording information is displayed on the plexiglass panel in bright red, bold characters.
The recording selection buttons for each track are wisely positioned just below the quick level indicators, which, by the way, light up in orange for levels below 0 dB and in red for levels above. Pressed for recording, the 'REC' light located above each track button lights up, but only if the 'Recording/Pause' transport button is already activated, as indicated by the appearance of the red letters 'REC' to the left of the first level indicator. Recording then starts as soon as you press the Play button.
Finally, on the MT44D, the recording levels are adjusted via small rotary controls carefully concealed behind a flip cover beneath the indicators. A notched central potentiometer, marked 'Pitch,' also allows for a ±10% variation in tape speed to match pre-recorded tracks to out-of-tune instruments or for special effects. A headphone jack is also available for stereo monitoring (tracks 1 and 3 on the left, 2 and 4 on the right).
Regarding recording quality, the specifications show an impressive signal-to-noise ratio of 67 dB in Dolby C. During multi-track tests, this figure was largely confirmed with a TDK SA60 cassette meeting the High Bias requirements (equalization 70 μs) specified by Yamaha. Without Dolby, the signal-to-noise ratio drops to 55 dB – a noticeable and clearly audible difference. The multi-track was undoubtedly optimal with Dolby C integrated. Ultimately, a significantly improved device that is very appreciated.

The RM602 is a good compact 6-in-2 mixing console, likely suitable for readers seeking an affordable sub-keyboard mixing console for live use. It truly comes into its own when connected to a 4-track recorder like the MT44D.
All connections are, as expected, asymmetrical (single screen) and are made via jack or phono sockets located on the rear panel. It has six inputs: a stereo echo send (return) on jack, tape inputs/outputs on jack, a stereo auxiliary input on jack, stereo master outputs on jack and phono, a stereo insert on jack, and separate monitor outputs on jack. Quite comprehensive, isn't it?
At the top of each channel is a four-position input selector that adjusts the sensitivity of source signals at the mixer input: -50 dB (microphone), -35 dB (guitars), or -20 dB (keyboards and line levels). The fourth position, on channels 1 to 4 ('Tape'), selects the playback signal from the MT44D for final mixing, thus avoiding any patching. The same position on channels 5 and 6 is specially designed for adapting to stereo outputs of a turntable and features complete RIAA equalization. An additional advantage for audiovisual applications.
An echo or reverb, connected to the 'Effects Send/Return' jacks on the rear panel, allows each input to be processed. A variable level of each input can then be sent independently via the 'Effects' control to the processing unit for treatment, and then re-injected into the mix. The overall level adjustment of the 'Send' and 'Return' signals also allows them to be adapted to a wide range of equipment, while the individual left and right returns are an advantage for those who prefer stereo effects.
Since the input faders of the RM602 are used to directly adjust the recording levels of the MT44D on channels 1 to 4, the RM602 is equipped with separate rotary controls 'Monitor Level' and 'Monitor Pan' that allow configuring a return mix of input signals, regardless of the input faders' levels.
A stereo headphone jack, ideally placed on the front right edge of the mixing console, allows listening to the return mix sent to the separate return outputs available on the rear panel, whose overall level is controlled by the 'Monitor' button to the left of the power switch. Only the master output levels are visible on the two tri-color LED level indicators of the mixing console, which display a peak response similar to that of the MT44D.
If six inputs are not enough for you, the RM602 is equipped with two additional mono inputs (including one stereo) via the 'Auxiliary In' phono connections at the back. A stereo cassette containing sound effects or other audio could be connected here, with its level mixed via the 'Aux In' button located above the main faders. An excellent additional feature that increases the flexibility of this small mixing console.
