Zoo York
Y. Nagasaki
Koyu Shuppan/1993/Japanese/260*210*10
Zoo York / Fen no Nariori” is a collection of photographs by Japanese photographer Y. Nagasaki, who was born in Niigata Prefecture in 1952 and moved to the United States after graduating from Aoyama Gakuin University. After graduating from Long Island University in New York, he entered the photography department of New York University, where he studied under the tutelage of Marie Ellen Mark, one of America's leading female photographers. As if following in her footsteps, Nagasaki's subjects have always been minorities outside the mainstream, such as prostitutes (and their husbands), gays, lesbians, homeless people, punks, drug addicts, and AIDS sufferers. This book, “New York City,” is composed mainly of the above-mentioned subjects. The diverse people who inhabit one of the world's leading economic cities. Such fascinating people and the city are as interesting as a “zoo” to Nagasaki. This book is filled with the charms of “New York,” a melting pot of races and a city where people are free to choose their own lifestyles and live as they wish, without having the values of others imposed on them.
