Description from the seller

Antique walnut game box, handcrafted and attributed to Southern Germany (Black Forest), from the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1880–1910.

Rare salon box made of solid walnut, entirely hand-carved. The lid features a high-relief leafy decoration framing playing card emblems (hearts, clubs, diamonds, spades), a motif consistently repeated throughout the piece. The sides and front are also carved, demonstrating high-quality craftsmanship intended for a bourgeois clientele.

The interior is particularly remarkable and constitutes a highly rare element: it is compartmentalized and includes several small independent boxes intended for tokens, each finely hand-carved with a decor mimicking wood grain and adorned with applied card emblems. This level of interior finishing far exceeds that of typical game boxes of the period, which were usually equipped with simple compartments.

Solid construction, precise adjustments, hand-beveled angles, original brass hinges. Beautiful, uniform antique patina, indicating age and careful use of the object. The entire piece is complete and functional.

Probably old walnut wood, with fine and tight grain, perfectly suited for detailed sculpture.

Approximate dimensions: 26.5 × 17.5 × 6.5 cm.

A rare and high-quality living room game box, both decorative and functional, representative of the craftsmanship of workshops in Southern Germany at the end of the 19th century.

Photographs are an integral part of the description.

IMPORTANT: The lid has suffered a deformation visible in the photos, and the key is missing.
