Description from the seller

Northern Netherlands, Republic of Holland, Scheepjesschelling, 1711

From 1700 onwards, these ship's tokens were exclusively issued for the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC), intended for use in Southeast Asia. Despite the relatively large editions, only a small portion has been preserved, and some years are extremely rare; the year 1711 is very scarce.

The depiction of the warship symbolizes the Republic and its maritime power. The navy played an important role in achieving the independence of the Northern Netherlands. The Latin phrase 'Vigilate Deo Confidentes' dates from the time of the Revolt (16th century) and became the motto of the States of Holland in the Republic; it remains the motto of the province of South Holland to this day.

Rarity: Most rare

On the front side is the crowned provincial coat of arms of Holland between the letters '6 – S.', above which is the year 1711, surrounded by the text MO:NO:ORD:HOLL:ET:WEST:FRI.

On the reverse side, a sailing warship before the wind is depicted. On the stern, the large flag is fluttering, while on a plain cloth, the St. Andrew's cross is visible. The entire scene is surrounded by the text VIGILATE DEO CONFIDENTES ('Be vigilant, trusting in God').
