Han dynasty bronze ritual wine vase, a rare square-based fang hu with taotie-masked ring handles, 28.4 cm high and 17.5 cm wide, in good condition and with provenance from a French collection dating back to 1970 and legally sold from France in 2023.

Rare vase, a ritual wine vessel in bronze from the Han dynasty.
Ritual fang hu wine vessel with a quadrangular baluster shape on a square foot, decorated on two of its faces with ring-shaped handles held by taotie masks.
Flared body with four sides, pedestal foot, and loop handles. This magnificent vase was used for wine during ritual occasions.
The Han dynasty, which reigned from 202 BC to AD 220, brought great prosperity and stability to China, ruling over a golden age of classical Chinese civilization during which China experienced major advances, including the widespread development of a monetary economy, the invention of paper, and numerous progress in decorative arts.
Excellent condition, beautiful patina - presence of an old label.

Provenance: From an old French collection of Asian art formed in the 1970s.
