Description from the seller
Antique Early 20th Century Silvery-Plated Biscuit Barrel in Baroque Revival Style
Magnificent early 20th century silver-plated biscuit barrel (or biscuit jar), crafted in the opulent Baroque Revival style, originating from Sheffield, England– the renowned hub of British electroplated silverware production.
Dating to circa 1900-1920(Edwardian era transitioning into the early 20th century), this piece exemplifies the lavish decoration popular during that period.
The fully metal body features elaborate repoussé and chased ornamentation with scrolling floral motifs, foliate designs, and raised relief patterns evoking the grandeur of Baroque aesthetics.
It is equipped with a domed lid featuring a handcut glass panel for viewing contents, a twisted rope-style swing handle (bail handle) for easy carrying, and striking figural side handles in the form of mythical winged beasts – likely griffins – adding a dramatic and fantastical touch.
Raised on a shaped footed base, this substantial barrel was designed to elegantly store and display biscuits or sweets on the dining table, while doubling beautifully as a luxurious jewelry holder or decorative box today.
A fine example of English craftsmanship, ideal for collectors of antique tableware, Baroque Revival pieces, or whimsical figural silver plate.
Dimensions:
- Height: 18 cm(with handle raised)
- Diameter: 27.5 cm(include handles)
Condition: Good antique condition with a rich, warm patina and strong plating intact. Minor age-related wear consistent with gentle use. The glass inside the lid does not seems to be original, but looks good. Retains its original shine and intricate details.
Origin:
- Place of production: Sheffield, England
- Approximate date: circa 1900-1920
Shipment: It will be packed with care and tracked
