Description from the seller
Christ crucified - Neapolitan school - Polychrome papier-mâché - 18th century - Brotherhood of the Holy Apostles Andrew and Matthew.
Measurements with a 36 cm base, without a 32 cm base.
The sculpture depicts Christ crucified, represented with a slightly tilted body and the head inclined towards the right shoulder, in an attitude of intense suffering and dignity. The particularly expressive face is characterized by half-closed eyes, arched eyebrows, and a delicate wavy beard. The crown of thorns, fitting tightly to the head, enhances the dramatic intensity of the scene.
The bust shows signs of bleeding wounds, rendered with a sober yet extremely effective coloration.
The painted drops of blood and the depiction of abrasions contribute to giving a strong pathos to the sacred image.
The fabric is modeled with dense and dynamic folds that wrap around the hips with an elegant twisting movement.
The sculpture, despite the loss of its original arms (now sealed in the area of the stumps), retains its complete structure and its iconographic power.
The work is made in CARTAPESTA NAPOLETANA, a technique typical of the devotional production of 18th-century southern Italy. The original coloration still present shows a patina of time of rare quality, with harmonious tonal variations and light natural craquelures. The polychromy is executed with earthy and ochre colors on the body, while the blood rivulets still display vivid intensity. The surface retains a homogeneous and evocative patina, unaltered by invasive interventions.
Excellent overall condition as shown in the photo.
