Griechisch-römische Harpokrates-Figurine aus Ägypten, made of terracotta, in excellent condition, 96 mm high, 70 mm wide and 45 mm deep, dating from the 3rd to 1st century BCE, acquired from an auction house.
Description from the seller
Greco-Roman Harpocrates figure from Egypt.
From the estate of a learned collector around 1900. According to a contemporary label, acquired in 1905 at the famous salesroom of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
The naked Harpokrates sits with a crossed left leg and holds a small vessel in his left hand. His right hand rests on his right knee. He wears a cap on his head. Between his legs lies an oversized phallus, symbolizing fertility, but unlike Priapos, due to the god's childhood (still) flaccid.
Terracotta, beige tone, 3rd-1st century BC.
Intact, surface with incrustations and remnants of painting.
Acquired in 2024 in the German art trade (H. Historica).
