The jagged hairstyle, carefully digitized fingers, and the umbilical protrusion matching that of the face distinguish this Songye Nkisi, nkishi (pl. mankishi) of the Songye. Erosions and cracks are present. The Nkisi acts as a mediator between God and humans, tasked with protecting against various ailments. Large specimens are collectively owned by an entire village, while smaller figures belong to an individual or a family. In the 16th century, the Songye migrated from the Shaba region to settle on the left bank of the Lualaba. Their society is organized patriarchally.
