Description from the seller
Ceremonial face mask - Grebo - Liberia / Côte d'Ivoire
The Grebo ethnicity is located at the border of Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia.
They sculpt masks that embody the spirits of the invisible world residing in the forests.
Made by high-grade initiates, these masks appear during rituals reserved for initiates and during more secular celebrations for the general population.
Three types of masks are commonly discussed:
- masks depicting a large face topped with two buffalo horns, like the Bété war masks.
- The masks representing the feminine ideal, with slit-shaped eyes, whose gentleness would bring them closer to the Deangle masks from Dan.
Finally, the masks with tubular eyes, more abstract.
