Description from the seller
Bwende reliquary head (Bwete/Bwende) – DRC – ancient polychromy, high intensity
Authentic reliquary head attributed to the Bwende (DRC), a piece with a striking presence. This sculpture immediately stands out for its ancient red polychromy, its long wrapped neck, and the very strong expressiveness of the face: mouth open, showing the teeth, a pierced gaze, a beard made of fibers, pierced ears, and a coiffure/top element in vegetal material. Taken as a whole, it forms a rare and spectacular work, typical of memory and protection objects linked to the cult of ancestors.
The patina and the surface condition are particularly telling: pigments worn by time, areas of abrasion, accumulations and traces of use that give the piece immediate visual authenticity. The sculpture concentrates a rare emotional charge, reinforced by the frontal presence and the verticality of the support, designed to be seen and “present” in a ritual context.
A highly sought-after piece among collectors for its typology, its aesthetic impact, and the preservation of adornment elements (fibres, hairstyle, polychromy). Ideal for a high-end display case or in a collection focused on the ritual arts of Central Africa.
Overview of our expertise firm:
Based in Belgium, our appraisal and sales house has been assisting collectors and families for many years, with a simple approach: seriousness, transparency and service. We enjoy a solid reputation among tribal art enthusiasts and are among the leading sellers on Catawiki, where we count ourselves among the oldest merchants (more than 8 years).
We have specialized in valuing and ensuring the liquidation and dispersion of dozens of family collections, and have sold thousands of objects in partnership with private individuals, notaries, estates, inheritances, and collection cessations. Our track record speaks for itself: hundreds of evaluations nearing 100% positive feedback, an indicator that is worth more than any discussion of our commitment and reliability.
Pieces that have passed through our hands are today in prestigious collections and, for some, have joined museum institutions — a guarantee of the quality and consistency of our selection throughout the year. We regularly offer no-reserve sales.
